    JR Pass and Mount Fuji: how to get there

    Mount Fuji is one of the most photographed places in Japan. The JR Pass does not reach the 5th station of the mountain, but it gets you very close and to some of the best viewpoints.

    Best JR routes for Mount Fuji

    • Tokyo to Mishima on Hikari or Kodama in around 1 hour, then a local bus to the Hakone or Fuji area.
    • Tokyo to Shin Fuji on Kodama in around 1 hour 10 minutes, closest shinkansen station to the mountain.
    • Tokyo to Atami on Kodama, then JR Ito line for Izu views with Fuji in the background.

    Viewing Fuji from the shinkansen

    Between Shin Yokohama and Shizuoka, Fuji is on the right hand side when travelling from Tokyo. Pick a seat D for the best view. The clearest views are in autumn and winter.

    Getting closer with non JR transport

    • The Fujikyu Railway from Otsuki to Kawaguchiko is not covered by the JR Pass.
    • Buses to the 5th station are seasonal and not included.
    • You can still use the JR Pass to reach Otsuki and only pay the short last leg.

    Best free viewpoints near JR stations

    • Mishima Skywalk via short bus from Mishima station.
    • Miho no Matsubara from Shimizu station with a local bus.
    • Shin Fuji station forecourt for a postcard view.

    Does the JR Pass go to Mount Fuji 5th station?

    No. The pass takes you to nearby JR stations like Otsuki, Mishima and Shin Fuji. The final leg to the 5th station is by bus and is paid separately.

    Is Kawaguchiko covered by the JR Pass?

    Only the route to Otsuki is covered. From Otsuki, the Fujikyu Railway to Kawaguchiko is paid separately.

    When is the best chance to see Fuji?

    Cold months from November to February give the clearest views. Mornings are usually the best time of day.
