    JR Pass wheelchair accessibility on Japan's railways

    Japan's shinkansen and major JR stations are highly accessible. Here is how to plan a wheelchair friendly trip with the JR Pass.

    Wheelchair seats on the shinkansen

    • Each shinkansen has 1 to 2 wheelchair spaces per train.
    • Reserve at any JR Travel Service Centre with your pass and passport.
    • Adjacent companion seat included in the reservation.
    • From 2024, new trains added more wheelchair spaces on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines.

    At the station

    • Staff bring a portable ramp to board and alight.
    • Tell the gate staff your train, car and destination, they call ahead.
    • All major stations have elevators and accessible toilets.

    Booking ahead

    Wheelchair spaces can be reserved up to one month before travel. Arrive at the station 15 minutes early so staff can prepare the ramp. JR West and JR East both offer English speaking accessibility help desks.
