JR Pass in winter: snow, ski and clear Fuji views

Winter is one of the best seasons to travel Japan by train. Snowy mountains, hot springs, clear Fuji views and famous festivals are all easy with a JR Pass.

    01

Why winter and a JR Pass go together

    • Quieter trains and easier seat reservations than spring or autumn.
    • Clear air gives the best Mount Fuji views from the Tokaido shinkansen.
    • Snow regions like Nagano, Niigata and Hokkaido are all on the JR network.
    02

Top winter routes covered by the pass

    • Tokyo to Nagano on the Hokuriku shinkansen for skiing in Hakuba and Shiga Kogen.
    • Tokyo to Echigo Yuzawa on the Joetsu shinkansen, snow on arrival.
    • Tokyo to Sapporo via Shin Hakodate Hokuto and the Hokuto limited express.
    • Tokyo to Akita and Aomori for the Hirosaki snow festival.
    03

Winter festivals worth the train ride

    • Sapporo Snow Festival in early February.
    • Yokote Kamakura snow huts in mid February.
    • Otaru Snow Light Path also in February.
    04

    Tips for winter travel

    • Trains rarely run late even with snow. Always check JR East and JR Hokkaido alerts.
    • Stations are heated, pack layers you can remove inside.
    • Reserve seats early during New Year holidays, one of the busiest travel weeks.
