    Comparison

Is the JR Pass green car upgrade worth it

The green car JR Pass costs around 33 percent more than the ordinary pass but gives you wider seats, more legroom and quieter carriages. Here is how to decide if the upgrade is worth it for your trip.

    01

What you get in the green car

    • Wider 2 plus 2 seating instead of 2 plus 3.
    • Around 10 cm more legroom.
    • Reclining seats with foot rest.
    • Quieter carriages, mostly business travellers.
    • Free reserved seats on every shinkansen run.
    02

    Price difference

Adult 7 day passes: ordinary 50,000 yen, green 70,000 yen. That is a 20,000 yen difference, roughly the cost of one long shinkansen leg. The gap is similar in percentage terms for 14 and 21 day passes.

    03

    When green is worth it

    • You will spend many hours on the shinkansen across several days.
    • You are tall or want extra space for a laptop.
    • You are travelling in peak weeks like cherry blossom or Golden Week and want guaranteed quiet space.
    • You want a calmer ride after long flights into Japan.
    04

    When ordinary is enough

    • Most rides are under 2 hours.
    • You travel off peak when ordinary cars are half empty.
    • Budget matters more than comfort.
    • You will mainly use local JR lines, where green is rarely offered.
