What you need
- An iPhone 7 or newer running a current version of iOS.
- A physical Suica, Pasmo, ICOCA or other Japanese IC card.
- The free IC card balance checker app from nfcjp.com.
Every iPhone from the iPhone 7 onward has NFC built in, which means it can read a physical Japanese IC card. Here is exactly how to scan a Suica, Pasmo or ICOCA with your iPhone.
Open the app, choose read card and hold the top edge of your iPhone against the centre of the card. After a short beep the balance and the most recent train trips and shop purchases appear.
No Apple ID is needed and the data stays on your phone.
