How counting works
Validity counts in calendar days, not hours. A 7 day pass activated on a Monday expires at midnight the following Sunday. If you activate at 5 pm, you lose almost a full day.
Validity rules
The Japan Rail Pass is sold in 7, 14 and 21 consecutive day options. Validity is calendar based, not 24 hours, so the start date matters more than most travelers realize.
