    Setouchi Triangle with a JR Pass: Hiroshima, Onomichi, Takamatsu

    The Setouchi region wraps around the Seto Inland Sea, mixing islands, cycling, art and udon. The JR Pass covers the shinkansen and most local lines that tie it together.

    • Day 1: Hiroshima, Peace Park, Miyajima sunset.
    • Day 2: Sanyo Shinkansen to Onomichi, start of the Shimanami Kaido cycling route.
    • Day 3: Naoshima art island via Uno port.
    • Day 4: Takamatsu and Ritsurin Garden, sanuki udon tour.
    • Day 5: Back to Hiroshima or onward to Kyoto.

    What the JR Pass covers

    Hikari and Sakura shinkansen on the Sanyo line, JR local lines to Onomichi, Marine Liner across the Seto Ohashi bridge to Takamatsu, and the JR ferry to Miyajima. Naoshima ferries are private and not included.

    Do I need a separate ferry ticket for Naoshima?

    Yes. Shikoku Kisen ferries from Uno or Takamatsu are not covered by the JR Pass.

    Is the Miyajima ferry covered?

    JR West runs the ferry. From October 2023 a small 100 yen visitor tax applies on top.

    Can I bring a bike on the shinkansen?

    Yes, in a bike bag with a reservation. Or rent a bike at Onomichi for the Shimanami Kaido.
