Snow monkeys in Nagano with the JR Pass

The Jigokudani snow monkey park is one of Japan's most photographed winter scenes. From Tokyo the JR Pass covers the Hokuriku shinkansen to Nagano, the gateway to the monkeys.

    Route from Tokyo

    • Tokyo to Nagano by Hokuriku shinkansen: 1h 20m to 1h 50m, JR Pass covered.
    • Nagano to Yudanaka by Nagaden train: about 45 minutes, not JR.
    • Yudanaka to the park entrance by local bus, then 30 minute forest walk.

    Best time to go

December through March is the iconic season with monkeys bathing in snow steamed onsen. The park is open year round, but winter delivers the postcard shot.

    Practical tips

    • Wear sturdy boots, the forest path is icy.
    • Allow a full day from Tokyo, or stay one night in Yudanaka onsen.
    • Combine with skiing in Nozawa Onsen, also reached via Nagano.

    Frequently asked questions

    Quick answers to common questions.

Is the snow monkey park covered by the JR Pass?

Only the shinkansen to Nagano. The Nagaden train and park entry are extra.

Can I do it as a day trip from Tokyo?

Yes, leave early and return after sunset. One night in Yudanaka is more relaxing.

    When are monkeys most active?

Late morning is best for photos in winter.
