    Hokuriku route loop with the JR Pass

    The Hokuriku route turns Japan's classic Tokyo to Kyoto trip into a circle. With the Hokuriku shinkansen extended to Tsuruga, you can loop through Kanazawa and Fukui without backtracking.

    Suggested 8 day loop

    • Day 1 to 2: Tokyo.
    • Day 3: Hokuriku shinkansen Kagayaki to Kanazawa, around 2 hours 30, covered.
    • Day 4: Kanazawa sightseeing, Kenrokuen and Higashi Chaya.
    • Day 5: Tsurugi or Hakutaka to Tsuruga, transfer to Thunderbird to Kyoto.
    • Day 6 to 7: Kyoto and Nara.
    • Day 8: Tokaido shinkansen back to Tokyo.

    • Kanazawa, Fukui and Tsuruga see fewer foreign tourists than Kyoto.
    • Eiheiji temple and Tojinbo cliffs are easy detours from Fukui.

    It is tight. A 14 day pass gives more room and lets you add Hakone and the Japan Alps.
