    What is Miyajima?

Miyajima, officially known as Itsukushima, is a small island in Hiroshima Bay considered one of Japan's three most scenic views. The island has been a sacred Shinto site for centuries, and its iconic floating torii gate is recognized worldwide as a symbol of Japan.

The island is home to Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 6th century. The shrine's unique design, with buildings constructed on stilts over the water, creates the illusion that both the shrine and its famous torii gate are floating during high tide.

Beyond the shrine, Miyajima offers pristine nature, hiking trails up Mount Misen, traditional shopping streets, and delicious local cuisine. The island's friendly deer add to its mystical atmosphere, making it a must-visit destination easily accessible from Hiroshima.

    The floating torii gate

Itsukushima Shrine's vermillion torii gate is one of Japan's most iconic images. Standing 16 meters tall in the waters of Hiroshima Bay, the gate appears to float during high tide, creating a magical scene that has captivated visitors for centuries. At low tide, you can walk out to the base of the torii for a unique perspective. The shrine itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, was originally built in the 6th century and features elegant wooden structures extending over the water on stilts.

    Mount Misen

Rising 535 meters above the island, Mount Misen offers spectacular panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea and surrounding islands. Reach the summit via the Miyajima Ropeway, which takes you through primeval forest, or challenge yourself with one of three hiking trails. At the top, explore the historic Reikado Hall, home to a flame said to have burned continuously for 1,200 years. The mountain is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to wild deer and rare flora.

    Wildlife

    Friendly deer

Miyajima is famous for its friendly sika deer that roam freely throughout the island. Considered sacred messengers of the gods in Shinto tradition, these gentle animals are a beloved part of the island's charm. You'll encounter them along the shopping streets, near the shrine, and throughout the town. While they're accustomed to visitors, please remember not to feed them as human food can harm them. They're especially photogenic near the torii gate at sunset!

Miyajima is renowned for its local specialties. Grilled oysters are a must-try, harvested fresh from the surrounding waters and served at restaurants throughout the island. The famous momiji manju, maple leaf-shaped cakes filled with sweet bean paste, custard, or chocolate, make perfect souvenirs. Anago (conger eel) served over rice is another island delicacy.
