Ise Jingu is the most important shrine in Shinto. The JR Pass covers the JR Mie rapid express from Nagoya all the way to Ise Shi, the closest station to the shrine complex.

    How to get to Ise

    • Tokyo to Nagoya on Hikari, then Mie rapid express to Ise Shi, around 4 hours total.
    • Osaka or Kyoto: shinkansen to Nagoya then the Mie rapid express.
    • The Kintetsu line is faster but not covered by JR Pass.
    02

    The two main shrines

    • Geku (outer shrine): a short walk from Ise Shi station.
    • Naiku (inner shrine): bus from Geku or Ise Shi, 15 minutes.
    • Both are open from dawn to dusk and free to enter.

    Suggested day plan

Morning train from Nagoya to Ise Shi, walk through Geku, bus to Naiku for the main shrine surrounded by ancient cedars, lunch and shopping at Okage Yokocho, then return to Nagoya in time for a connection back to Tokyo or Kyoto. The full day works with a JR Pass.

    • Photography is restricted inside the inner sanctums.
    • Combine with Toba for pearl diving demonstrations on the way back.
