Best seats with Mount Fuji views
On the Tokaido shinkansen, seats on side D and E give you the Mount Fuji view between Shin Yokohama and Shizuoka. Book at least a few days ahead in clear weather.

Oversized luggage seats
If your suitcase is over 160 cm in total dimensions, you must reserve a seat in the last row of any carriage. The space behind the seat is free and the reservation costs nothing with a JR Pass.

Reserved vs non reserved cars
Non reserved cars are first come first served, usually cars 1 to 3. Fine off peak. In peak season you might end up standing for two hours, so always reserve.
