Where to store luggage on the shinkansen

Most travelers worry about luggage on Japan's shinkansen. Here is exactly where each bag goes and what rules apply.

    01

    On the train

    • Overhead racks fit cabin sized luggage up to 55 x 40 x 25 cm.
    • Space behind the last seat row holds one medium suitcase per passenger.
    • Bags over 160 cm total dimensions need an oversized baggage seat reservation, free with the JR Pass.
    • Bags over 250 cm are not allowed on board.
    02

    At the station

    • Coin lockers: 300 to 800 yen per day, accept IC cards.
    • Manned luggage counters at major stations, around 700 yen per bag per day.
    • Takkyubin same day delivery between hotels, 1,500 to 3,000 yen per bag.
