    How to travel around Tokyo as a tourist

    Tokyo has one of the densest train networks in the world. Knowing which line to use saves time and money.

    The three main networks

    • JR East: includes the Yamanote loop, Chuo Line and Sobu Line. Covered by the JR Pass.
    • Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway: cover central Tokyo and many tourist spots. Not covered by the JR Pass.
    • Private railways like Keio, Odakyu and Tobu, for areas like Hakone and Nikko.

    When to use the JR Pass in Tokyo

    • Yamanote line loop around Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara and Ueno.
    • Narita Express from Narita Airport to central Tokyo.
    • Day trips to Yokohama, Kamakura or Nikko via JR.

    When to use an IC card

    • Subway rides for Asakusa, Roppongi, Tsukiji and Ginza.
    • Buses and shorter walks between attractions.
    • Vending machines and convenience stores.

    Smart combos

    Most travellers carry both a JR Pass and an IC card. Use the JR Pass for free JR rides and longer trips, and tap the IC card for subway hops in between.
