What the voucher looks like
The exchange order is an A4 paper document with your name, pass type, duration and a unique order number. Treat it like cash: it cannot be reissued if lost.
How it works
When you buy a Japan Rail Pass outside Japan you receive an exchange order voucher. This is not the pass itself. You swap it for the real pass at any JR exchange office in Japan.
The exchange order is an A4 paper document with your name, pass type, duration and a unique order number. Treat it like cash: it cannot be reissued if lost.
At the office you choose the start date. The pass can begin any date within 30 days of exchange. Pick the first day you will need a long train, not the day you land.
