    Naoshima art island with the JR Pass

    Naoshima is Japan's most famous art island, home to the Chichu, Lee Ufan and Benesse House museums. The JR Pass covers your rail leg to the ferry port, leaving only a cheap boat ride to pay.

    Getting to Naoshima

    • From Okayama: JR Uno line to Uno port, around 50 minutes, covered.
    • From Takamatsu (Shikoku): JR is not used. Ferry only from Takamatsu port.
    • Uno to Naoshima Miyanoura: 20 minute ferry, 300 yen, not covered.
    • Takamatsu to Naoshima: 50 minute ferry, 520 yen, not covered.

    Tips

    Book Chichu Museum tickets online weeks ahead. Bring cash for ferries and small cafes. Most museums close Mondays. Pair Naoshima with Teshima and Inujima for a 2 to 3 day art island hop, using Takamatsu as your base.

    Is the Naoshima ferry covered by the JR Pass?

    No. Ferries between Uno or Takamatsu and Naoshima are operated by Shikoku Kisen, not JR.

    Can I do Naoshima as a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka?

    Yes but it is a long day. Shin Osaka to Okayama by shinkansen is 45 minutes, then 50 minutes by JR Uno line.

    Are museum tickets included?

    No. The JR Pass covers transport only. Museum tickets cost 510 to 2,500 yen each.
