What the JR Pass is
The Japan Rail Pass is an unlimited ride pass for the JR train network in Japan, valid for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days. It is sold only to foreign visitors on a tourist visa.

What it covers
- Shinkansen bullet trains, except Nozomi and Mizuho without supplement.
- JR local and limited express trains across the country.
- Tokyo Monorail is not included, the Narita Express and Haruka Airport Express are.
- JR ferry to Miyajima island.

When the pass saves money
- One Tokyo to Kyoto round trip alone costs around 28,000 yen, already close to a 7 day pass.
- If you plan to visit two or more cities like Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima or Kanazawa, the pass usually pays back.
- Short trips around only Tokyo are often cheaper with IC cards.

How it works in practice
- Order online from your home country, choose your shipping address.
- Receive a physical exchange voucher by post.
- Activate it in Japan at a JR ticket office, choose your start date within 90 days of purchase.
- Use the pass at the manned gate at every station.
