Japan Rail Pass validity: 7, 14 and 21 day options explained

The Japan Rail Pass is sold in 7, 14 and 21 consecutive day options. Validity is calendar based, not 24 hours, so the start date matters more than most travelers realize.

    01

    How counting works

Validity counts in calendar days, not hours. A 7 day pass activated on a Monday expires at midnight the following Sunday. If you activate at 5 pm, you lose almost a full day.

    02

    Choosing the duration

    • 7 days: ideal for Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima loop.
    • 14 days: add Hokkaido or Kyushu without rushing.
    • 21 days: full country exploration including Tohoku and Shikoku.
    03

    Start date strategy

    • Activate on the morning of your first long shinkansen trip, not your arrival day.
    • You can choose any start date within 30 days of exchange.
    • Plan your busiest train days inside the validity window.
