The Shinkansen line extends to Hakodate on Hokkaido island, from where you can take a limited express train to complete your journey to Sapporo. The entire trip from Tokyo to Sapporo via this route typically takes about 16 hours. If you’re planning extensive travel in Japan, purchasing a Japan Rail Pass before your trip can be a great idea. This pass allows for unlimited travel on most Shinkansen trains and other JR transport services.
