Kamakura day trip from Tokyo with the JR Pass

• Take the JR Yokosuka line direct from Tokyo Station to Kamakura, around 60 minutes.
• From Shinagawa or Shimbashi the same train works, free with the JR Pass.
• Change at Kamakura for the JR Yokosuka line one stop to Kita Kamakura for the temples.

• Great Buddha at Kotokuin, a short walk or bus from Hase station.
• Hasedera Temple with its garden and ocean views.
• Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in the centre of town.
• Kita Kamakura zen temples including Engakuji and Kenchoji.

Catch a 9:00 train from Tokyo. Start at Kita Kamakura for the morning calm at Engakuji, walk south through Kenchoji to central Kamakura, lunch near Komachi street, take the Enoden to Hase for the Great Buddha and Hasedera, and head back via Kamakura station before evening rush. Everything between Tokyo and Kamakura runs on the JR Pass.

• The Enoden line between Kamakura and Hase is not covered by the JR Pass, fare is around 200 yen.
• Weekends are crowded, weekday mornings are best.
• Pair Kamakura with Enoshima for a full coast day.
