    Last shinkansen and JR train schedules explained

    Shinkansen do not run overnight. Catching the last train of the day is a key part of planning, especially if you want to maximise sightseeing without paying for an extra hotel night.

    Typical last shinkansen times

    • Tokyo to Shin-Osaka: last Nozomi around 21:24, last Hikari around 21:00.
    • Shin-Osaka to Tokyo: last Nozomi around 21:24.
    • Tokyo to Hakata: last direct service departs around 18:00.
    • Tokyo to Sendai: last Hayabusa around 21:44.
    • Tokyo to Kanazawa: last Kagayaki around 21:04.
    • All times shift slightly each timetable; verify on the day.

    Tips for late evening travel

    • Reserve a seat: late trains fill with business travellers.
    • Check transfer windows. Missing a connection can mean staying overnight.
    • JR ekiben shops close around 22:00, buy dinner before boarding.
    • Stations lock at night, so don't plan to sleep in them.

    If you miss the last train

    There are no overnight shinkansen apart from the Sunrise sleeper. Options are capsule hotels near major stations, highway buses (not covered by JR Pass) or a taxi for short distances. The free JR Pass seat reservation system is the easiest way to lock in your last train hours before departure.
