How to get to Ise
- Tokyo to Nagoya on Hikari, then Mie rapid express to Ise Shi, around 4 hours total.
- Osaka or Kyoto: shinkansen to Nagoya then the Mie rapid express.
- The Kintetsu line is faster but not covered by JR Pass.
Sacred sites
Ise Jingu is the most important shrine in Shinto. The JR Pass covers the JR Mie rapid express from Nagoya all the way to Ise Shi, the closest station to the shrine complex.
Morning train from Nagoya to Ise Shi, walk through Geku, bus to Naiku for the main shrine surrounded by ancient cedars, lunch and shopping at Okage Yokocho, then return to Nagoya in time for a connection back to Tokyo or Kyoto. The full day works with a JR Pass.
