    Rail access tips

    • Most festival stations get extremely crowded. Reserve return shinkansen seats before you go.
    • Nagaoka: Joetsu shinkansen direct from Tokyo, 100 minutes, fully covered.
    • Omagari: Akita shinkansen Komachi from Tokyo, around 3 hours, covered.
    • Sumida: JR Sobu line to Asakusabashi or Ryogoku.

    Practical tips

Arrive at the viewing area 3 to 5 hours early for the largest festivals. Bring a small tarp, water and a portable fan. Trains after the show are packed. Hotels in host cities sell out months ahead, so basing in nearby Tokyo or Sendai and using the JR Pass to ride in saves money and stress.

    Frequently asked questions

    Quick answers to common questions.

Is the JR Pass worth it for fireworks trips?

Yes. A single Tokyo to Nagaoka round trip already approaches the cost of a 7 day pass.

Do I need a paid seat at the fireworks?

Free standing areas exist at every festival. Paid reserved tatami sections range from 3,000 to 30,000 yen and sell out fast.

    When does fireworks season run?

Mid July to late August is peak, with smaller events into October and November.
