    Japan fireworks festivals (hanabi) with the JR Pass

    Japanese summer means hanabi taikai, huge fireworks festivals where rivers and skies fill with light. A JR Pass lets you chase the best displays in different cities through July and August.

    • Sumida River Fireworks, Tokyo: late July, 20,000 shells.
    • Nagaoka Festival, Niigata: 2 to 3 August, 20,000 shells including the legendary Phoenix.
    • Omagari National Fireworks, Akita: late August, the competition that crowns Japan's best pyrotechnicians.
    • PL Hanabi, Osaka: 1 August, 20,000 shells in around an hour.
    • Tsuchiura National Fireworks, Ibaraki: early November, competitive festival close to Tokyo.

    Rail access tips

    • Most festival stations get extremely crowded. Reserve return shinkansen seats before you go.
    • Nagaoka: Joetsu shinkansen direct from Tokyo, 100 minutes, fully covered.
    • Omagari: Akita shinkansen Komachi from Tokyo, around 3 hours, covered.
    • Sumida: JR Sobu line to Asakusabashi or Ryogoku.

    Practical tips

    Arrive at the viewing area 3 to 5 hours early for the largest festivals. Bring a small tarp, water and a portable fan. Trains after the show are packed. Hotels in host cities sell out months ahead, so basing in nearby Tokyo or Sendai and using the JR Pass to ride in saves money and stress.
