Tokyo to Hakone: routes, times and what the JR Pass covers

Hakone sits about 90 minutes from Tokyo and is the classic first escape from the city: Lake Ashi, open air art, sulphur vents and Mount Fuji views on a clear day. There are two main ways in, and only one of them is covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

    01

Option 1: shinkansen to Odawara, covered by the JR Pass

    • Tokyo to Odawara by Kodama or Hikari shinkansen: 35 to 40 minutes.
    • Fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass, seat reservation free of charge.
    • Nozomi is faster on paper but needs a supplement, and it barely helps on this short hop.
    • From Odawara you continue into Hakone on the Hakone Tozan line and buses, which are not JR.
    02

Option 2: Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku

The Romancecar runs Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto in about 85 minutes with no changes. It is a private railway, so it is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass. A one way limited express ticket is roughly 2,470 yen.

If you already hold a Japan Rail Pass, the shinkansen to Odawara is the cheaper choice because the long leg is free.

    Getting around inside Hakone

    • The Hakone loop uses the Tozan railway, cable car, ropeway and the Lake Ashi boat.
    • None of these are JR, so budget for a Hakone Free Pass covering the loop.
    • The two day Hakone Free Pass from Odawara is around 5,000 yen for adults.
    • Ride the loop clockwise from Hakone-Yumoto for the best Mount Fuji timing in the morning.
    04

Is it worth a day trip or an overnight?

A day trip works if you leave Tokyo before 08:00 and skip the ropeway queues. An overnight in a Hakone onsen ryokan is the better experience, and it lets you catch clear morning air when Fuji is most likely to be visible.

    Frequently asked questions

    Quick answers to common questions.

Is Hakone covered by the Japan Rail Pass?

The shinkansen from Tokyo to Odawara is covered. Transport inside Hakone, including the Tozan railway, ropeway and boat, is not JR and needs a separate ticket.

How long does Tokyo to Hakone take?

About 40 minutes to Odawara by shinkansen, or about 85 minutes to Hakone-Yumoto on the Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku.

Should I buy a Hakone Free Pass as well?

Yes if you plan to do the sightseeing loop. It covers the railway, cable car, ropeway and boat, which the JR Pass does not.

Can I see Mount Fuji from Hakone?

On clear days, best from the Lake Ashi boat and the Owakudani ropeway. Visibility is highest in winter mornings.
