    JR Pass for group travel in Japan

    Travelling Japan as a group is easier with a JR Pass because every member rides on the same ticket. A few simple booking habits keep your party seated together.

    Booking seats together

    • Reserve all seats in a single transaction at the JR ticket office.
    • Provide the full group size up front to be assigned rows together.
    • Hayabusa, Hayate, Komachi, Kagayaki and some Hokkaido services require reserved seats for everyone.
    • Reservations are free with the JR Pass.

    Family tips

    • Children aged 6 to 11 use the child JR Pass (50% off).
    • Children under 6 ride free if they sit on a lap.
    • First and last rows have extra legroom for strollers.
    • Multi purpose rooms for nursing can be booked free.

    Luggage as a group

    On Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu shinkansen, oversized bags (total over 160 cm) need free advance reservation, and oversized seats are limited per car. Reserve early or send larger pieces ahead with takkyubin, which is the easiest solution for groups of four or more.
