    Traveling Japan over New Year with a JR Pass

    New Year, Shogatsu, is the biggest holiday in Japan. With a JR Pass you can ride past the crowds, but planning matters more than usual.

    • Trains run on a special holiday timetable, often more frequently.
    • Shinkansen are extra busy 28 Dec to 4 Jan.
    • Many shops and museums close 1 to 3 January.

    • Reserve seats the moment they open, one month before.
    • Non reserved cars can sell out and end up standing room only.
    • Travel on 31 Dec or 1 Jan for noticeably emptier trains.

    Watch the sunrise from a coastal JR line, visit Meiji Shrine or Fushimi Inari, eat osechi ryori, and enjoy the unusually quiet city streets on 1 January.
