    Japan Rail Pass eligibility: who can buy and use it

    Core eligibility rule

    You must enter Japan on a Temporary Visitor status, which is the standard tourist stamp given on arrival for stays of up to 90 days. Work, student and other long term visas do not qualify.

    • Foreign tourists with a Temporary Visitor stamp.
    • Japanese nationals permanently living abroad with proof of residency.
    • Children: child pass for ages 6 to 11. Under 6 travel free with an adult.

    • Original passport with Temporary Visitor stamp or sticker.
    • Original exchange order voucher.
    • Filled out application form (provided at the office).
