    Hakone

    From Tokyo, take Tokaido shinkansen Kodama to Odawara (covered), then the Hakone Tozan line on a Hakone Free Pass. Famous for views of Mount Fuji and luxury ryokan.

    From Hakata take the Sonic and Yufu limited expresses, both included. Beppu has steaming jigoku hells, Yufuin offers stylish ryokan with mountain views.

    From Tokyo take the JR Joetsu shinkansen to Takasaki, transfer to local JR lines and a short bus. Kusatsu has one of Japan's most powerful sulphuric springs.

    Noboribetsu (Hokkaido)

    From Sapporo, JR Hokuto limited express to Noboribetsu, around 1 hour 15 minutes, covered by the JR Pass. Volcanic jigokudani steam vents and traditional onsen ryokan.
