How to activate your Japan Rail Pass

When you order from GetJRPass we ship a physical exchange voucher to your home. Once you land in Japan you swap that voucher for the actual pass at an exchange office. Here is exactly how the activation works.

    01

    Where to exchange your voucher

You can exchange at almost any major JR station, not only the one closest to your hotel. Pick whichever is most convenient for your first travel day.

    • JR exchange offices at major stations such as Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shin Osaka, Kyoto, Hakata and Sapporo.
    • JR ticket counters at Narita, Haneda, Kansai and Chubu airports.
    • Any JR Travel Service Center in a city you arrive in.
    02

What to bring to the counter

    • The physical exchange voucher we shipped to you.
    • The same passport you used when ordering, with a short term visitor stamp.
    • A completed exchange form, available at the counter.
    03

    Choosing your start date

You do not have to start the pass on the day of activation. At the counter you choose any start date within one month from the exchange date.

This is useful if you spend the first days in Tokyo on the metro and only need the JR Pass later when you head to Kyoto, Osaka or further.

    04

How long do you have to exchange

    • The voucher is valid for three months from the issue date printed on it.
    • After exchange, the pass itself starts on the date you chose and runs for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days.
    05

    Reserving your first seats

Right after activation you can reserve seats for any shinkansen or limited express train, free of charge with the pass. Staff at the same counter handle reservations, or you can use a JR ticket machine.

Reserving early matters during cherry blossom season, Golden Week, summer holidays and New Year.

    06

    After activation

    • Show the pass at the manned gate, or scan the QR code at compatible automatic gates.
    • Keep the pass safe, replacements are not issued if it is lost.
    • Track recent train and konbini taps on your IC card separately, the JR Pass itself does not store balance.

    Frequently asked questions

    Quick answers to common questions.

Can I activate the JR Pass on the day I arrive in Japan?

Yes. Exchange offices at Narita, Haneda, Kansai and Chubu airports are open daily and you can exchange right after immigration. You can still pick a later start date if you prefer.

Do I need to activate the pass on a specific date?

No. You exchange the voucher first, then choose any start date within one month from that exchange.

What happens if I miss the three month voucher window?

An unexchanged voucher cannot be activated after three months. If your plans change, contact us before the deadline and we will help with options.

Can someone else activate the pass for me?

No. The traveller named on the voucher must be present with their passport. The pass is non transferable.

Is there a fee to activate or reserve seats?

No. Activation and seat reservations are included with your pass.

Can I change the start date after activation?

No. Once the pass is issued with a start date, the date is fixed. Choose carefully at the counter.
