Nozomi and Mizuho on the JR Pass: what to know

Nozomi (Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen) and Mizuho (Sanyo and Kyushu) are not covered by the standard JR Pass. Since October 2023, holders can ride them by paying a surcharge.

    01

    Why they are excluded

Nozomi and Mizuho are the fastest, most premium services on their lines. JR keeps them as a paid upgrade for JR Pass holders.

    02

    The Nozomi or Mizuho surcharge

    • Tokyo to Shin Osaka: about 4,960 yen extra each way.
    • Tokyo to Hiroshima: about 5,490 yen.
    • Osaka to Hakata: about 4,960 yen.
    • Pay at any JR ticket office before boarding.
    03

When the surcharge is worth it

    • Tight schedule where Hikari or Sakura would add 30+ minutes.
    • Last train of the day situations.
    • Otherwise stick to free Hikari, Sakura, Kodama, Tsubame services.

    Frequently asked questions

    Quick answers to common questions.

Can JR Pass holders ride Nozomi at all?

Yes, with the paid surcharge introduced in October 2023. Without it, you must take Hikari or Kodama.

Is the surcharge cheaper than a regular ticket?

Yes, much cheaper. It only covers the limited express upgrade, not the base fare.

    What about Mizuho?

Same model. Mizuho needs the same surcharge to ride on the Sanyo or Kyushu Shinkansen.
