    Shinkansen wifi and power outlets: what to expect onboard

    Most shinkansen lines now offer free wifi and power outlets, but coverage and seat placement vary. Here is what to expect on each major route.

    Free wifi by line

    • Tokaido and Sanyo shinkansen: free Shinkansen Free Wi-Fi on most trains.
    • Tohoku, Hokkaido, Joetsu and Hokuriku: free wifi on N700S and E5/E7 series.
    • Sessions cap at 30 minutes but can be renewed unlimited times.

    Power outlets

    • N700S and N700 series: outlet at every seat.
    • Older N700: outlets only at window seats and front and rear rows.
    • Green car always has outlets at every seat.

    Tips to stay connected

    • Bring a Japan eSIM as backup for tunnels.
    • Save offline maps and reservations before boarding.
    • Carry a short USB cable, outlets are placed low under the seat.
