    Best shinkansen seat for Mount Fuji views

    The Tokaido shinkansen passes close to Mount Fuji between Tokyo and Nagoya. With the right seat and a bit of luck on the weather, you get a clear view for several minutes.

    Which side to sit on

    • Going from Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka: pick the right side (seats D or E).
    • Going from Kyoto or Osaka to Tokyo: pick the left side, also seats D or E.
    • Window seats are A and E. E is the better view side both ways for Fuji.

    When you see Fuji

    The clearest view is between Mishima and Shin Fuji stations, around 40 minutes after leaving Tokyo and 1 hour 50 minutes after leaving Shin Osaka. The view lasts about 5 minutes if the sky is clear.

    Best time of day and year

    • Mornings in winter are clearest, especially December to February.
    • Sunset can give a pink glow on the snow.
    • Summer often brings cloud cover, mid afternoon is worst.

    • Tell staff you want a seat on the right side facing the direction of travel.
