First time in Japan
All you need to know before you go
Let's start with the basics
In this section, we'll walk you through when to visit, what rail pass to use, hotels to look for, internet connection and much more. Our staff and team have all been in Japan multiple times and collected a great list of tips for your first visit.
When to visit Japan?
Japan is very crowded during Sakura Season and Golden Week. Instead, travel during May-June or October-November for great weather and fewer crowds. July and August are super hot in big cities like Tokyo.
Find the correct rail pass
Japan has several train passes for unlimited access to Shinkansen, express trains, and local trains. The nationwide Japan Rail Pass is most common, but Regional Passes can save money for specific areas.
Learn moreHotels near a station
Save time by finding a hotel near a JR or Metro station. Big cities can require 20-30 minutes of walking to the nearest station. Once at a station, you're connected to Japan's entire train network.
Rent a pocket WiFi router
Free WiFi in Japan is slow and limited. Rent a portable pocket WiFi router that the whole family can share. Pick up and return at the airport.
Learn moreTipping in Japan
Forget tipping! In Japan, excellent service is the norm and staff are paid fairly. Leaving money can be seen as rude. A simple 'arigatou gozaimasu' (thank you) is all you need.
Respect the Japanese culture
The locals are polite, quiet, clean and helpful. Don't throw trash on the street, don't tip, don't talk loudly on trains, stay in line, and don't push in queues.
Expect to be rejected
While uncommon, some clubs and restaurants may refuse entry to foreigners. Most places welcome everyone. If rejected, it's likely due to limited capacity or language barriers, not you personally.
Tax-free shopping
Japan offers tax-free shopping for tourists. Look for the 'Tax Free Shop' sign. Spend at least ¥5,000 at one store. Keep your receipts for the refund at the airport.
Japan is safe to visit
Japan has a very low crime rate. Be aware of your surroundings at night in party areas. Know your evacuation route for earthquakes and consider travel insurance.
Amusement parks
Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea, Fuji-Q Highland, Universal Studios, Sanrio Puroland, Ghibli Park, and Edo Wonderland offer unique experiences for all ages.
