Senso-ji temple
Oldest temple in Tokyo
What is Senso-ji temple?
Senso-ji Temple, located in the heart of Tokyo's Asakusa district, is one of Japan's most famous and oldest temples. Established in 628 AD, it attracts millions of visitors every year who come to experience its rich history, vibrant atmosphere, and stunning architecture. Whether exploring Tokyo for the first time or returning for another visit, Senso-ji offers an unforgettable cultural experience.
According to legend, two fishermen brothers found a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, in the Sumida River. Despite returning the statue to the river multiple times, it kept coming back to them. The temple was built to enshrine this sacred image, which remains hidden from public view to this day.
The temple complex includes the iconic Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate), the bustling Nakamise shopping street, a beautiful five-story pagoda, and the impressive main hall. The area surrounding Senso-ji retains much of its old Tokyo atmosphere, making it a perfect place to experience traditional Japanese culture.
