Pocket WiFi in Japan: cost, coverage and when to pick eSIM instead

A pocket WiFi router is still the simplest way to get several people online in Japan, and it works well on the shinkansen where onboard WiFi can be patchy. Here is what it costs, how pickup works and when an eSIM is the better call.

    01

    What pocket WiFi is

    • A pocket sized 4G or 5G router you rent for your trip.
    • Connects up to 5 to 10 devices, so it suits couples, families and groups.
    • No SIM swap and no phone settings to change.
    • Runs on the major Japanese networks, so coverage follows the rail lines closely.
    02

    What it costs

Typical rentals land between 400 and 900 yen per day depending on the data allowance and the router model. Unlimited plans usually include a fair use throttle after a few gigabytes a day. Insurance for loss or damage is normally a small daily add-on and worth taking.

    03

    Pickup and return

    • Airport counters at Narita, Haneda, Kansai and Chubu are the usual pickup point.
    • Hotel delivery is common if you land late or transfer straight onto a train.
    • Return by dropping the router in a prepaid post box at the airport.
    • Reserve before you fly, walk up stock at the counters runs out in peak season.
    04

    Pocket WiFi or eSIM

    • Travelling alone with a recent phone: an eSIM is cheaper and needs no pickup.
    • Two or more people sharing: pocket WiFi is usually cheaper per person.
    • Need a laptop or tablet online: pocket WiFi wins.
    • Worried about battery: an eSIM has nothing extra to charge, a router lasts most of a day.
    05

    Staying connected on trains

Shinkansen cars offer free onboard WiFi, but it slows down when the train is full and drops in tunnels. A router or an eSIM keeps maps, seat reservations and translation working through the day. See our shinkansen WiFi and power outlets guide for what is available at your seat, and check our WiFi Japan page for current rental options.

Book pocket WiFi or an eSIM

These are the same partners we use on our WiFi Japan and eSIM pages. Ninja WiFi for router rental with airport pickup, World eSIM for instant digital delivery.

    Frequently asked questions

    Quick answers to common questions.

How much is pocket WiFi in Japan?

Usually 400 to 900 yen per day, with unlimited plans at the higher end and a fair use limit on very heavy use.

Is pocket WiFi better than an eSIM?

For groups and for laptops, yes. For a solo traveller with a modern phone, an eSIM is simpler and cheaper.

Where do I pick up a router?

Airport counters at the main international airports, or by hotel delivery if you book ahead.

Does pocket WiFi work on the shinkansen?

Yes along most of the network, with brief drops in long tunnels.
