The Alpine Takayama-Matsumoto Area Pass is only available to non-Japanese passport holders under the entry status of “Temporary Visitor”.

You can NOT purchase a Alpine Takayama-Matsumoto Area Pass if you meet the following:

    Work visa

    Student visa
  • excluded
    Any other visa than Temporary Visitor.

    Toyama Chiho Railway limited express between Dentetsu-Toyama and Tateyama.

    JR Chuo Main line between Nagoya - Matsumoto.

    JR Oito line between Matsumoto & Shinano-Omachi.
  • included
    JR Takayama line between Toyama and Nagoya.

Refund in Japan:

Your Alpine Takayama-Matsumoto Area Pass can be refunded and returned within 90 days of purchase at any Station that exchange the voucher. JR will charge you a 10% processing fee on each Rail Pass.

Note that the Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass only can be purchased from February 15th until November 6th. The passes have to be activated between April 15th to November 6th.

Children under the age of 6 ride for free. Children above the age of 12 are considered adults.

The pass offers unlimited travel on JR lines in the designated Alpine Takayama-Matsumoto area, including popular routes such as the Shinhotaka Ropeway, Takayama Main Line, and the Matsumoto Electric Railway.

Good to know about the Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass

  • This regional pass is exclusively for tourists from outside Japan and requires pre-purchase.
  • The pass is valid for 5 days. Enjoy unlimited travel within the designated area for five consecutive days, starting from the first date of use. Plan your itinerary strategically to get the most out of the pass.
  • Seat reservations are highly recommended for specific limited express trains, especially during peak season, to guarantee a comfortable journey.
  • JR & Alpine Routes are included. The pass covers travel on JR local and limited express trains, as well as transportation along the stunning Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Ensure a seamless travel experience within the designated area.
  • Shinkansen trains are not included in this regional pass, keep that in mind.
  • Pass holders may not use the Tateyama cable car reservation system.
  • Children aged six to eleven require a child pass.
  • Children under the age of six travel for free if they do not occupy their own seat and are accompanied by an adult with a valid pass.
  • The rail pass is personal and can only be used by the original user. Transfer of the pass to another name is not possible.
  • Your passport and rail pass is required to bring along on all journeys and at all times incase JR Staff request to see your identity and check if you're the real pass holder.
  • The pass can not be used at automatic ticket gates, please show your pass to the JR Staff.
