Are you allowed to bring animals on the Shinkansen trains?
Hi Vicsh945!
Yes, you can bring pets on the shinkansen in Japan, but there are a few rules you need to follow. Small animals like cats, small dogs, rabbits, and birds are allowed as long as they are kept in a cage or carrier. The total size of the carrier (length + width + height) cannot be more than 120 cm, and the combined weight of the pet and carrier must be under 10 kg. The carrier must stay closed for the entire journey, and you cannot take your pet out during the ride.
Larger animals, such as big dogs, are not allowed on the shinkansen. Service dogs, including guide dogs, hearing dogs, and assistance dogs, are always permitted to travel with their owner free of charge.
There is no extra fee for bringing a small pet in a carrier, but sometimes you may be asked to show the carrier at the ticket gate to confirm it meets the rules.
With kind regards, Jonathan H.
