What is a Green Pass?

The Green Pass is the premium class pass offered by the Japan Railways (JR) Group, allowing travelers to enjoy first-class services on most JR trains. This pass grants access to the luxurious Green Car seats, featuring spacious seating, enhanced amenities, and a quieter, more exclusive atmosphere.

Which pass is for me?

Which wagons can I use?

All Shinkansen trains have wagons with non-reserved seats, which may be used unlimted and without booking with a JR Pass. Just enter, take a seat and enjoy the ride basicly. Green Pass holders can use the ordinary cars as well as the Green Cars, while Ordinary Pass holders are limited to the normal wagons only. Most trains consist of 15 train cars, where 3 are for non reserved seating, 7 ordinary with reserved seating and 5 for Green Pass holders with green cars. Keep in mind that all Green Cars require seat reservation, they don’t have any non-reserved seats. Seat reservation with a Japan Rail Pass is free of charge and unlimited.

You will always be able to ride the train, regardless of whether you have booked a seat or not, but to avoid having to stand up on longer and more popular routes if all seats are occupied, we recommend a visit to the nearest JR office or any Shinkansen Ticket Machine and free of charge reserve your seats and tickets by scanning the QR Code on your JR Pass.
