Reservations

Hello, I would like to know what happens if I miss the train I have reservation for? Is there some penalty?

Also I read that luggage on train which does not exceed 160 cm (sum of height, width and length) doesn’t need reservation for luggage, but do I need to sit in some specific place?

Thank you for answer.

Hi Lea, sorry for my slow reply.

There is no penelty if you were to miss your train. You can schedule a new train booked seating or jump on the next in the regular non-reserved carts.

There are certain areas when you board the train where you can store your luggage, you may however keep it with you on the ride if you rather have that. These racks are for baggage with a total dimension of 160 cm or less and does not require any pre-booking of a reserved oversize bag / baggage area.

The seats in the back of each cart on reserved cars have an oversize area behind their seats. Keep in mind however that these seats has to be reserved beforehand and does not exist on most non-reserved cars.

A passenger is allowed to carry on two pieced of baggage weighting less than 30 kg and with a total dimension of 250 cm or less and maximum eight of 200 cm, free of charge with reservation. Luggage pieces less than 160 cm in total can be brought on on the train without reservation.

Seating and overzise luggage can be reserved free of charge at any JR office or with the Shinkansen ticket machines in all major train stations and airports.

With kind regards, Jonathan H.
