Narita Airport has exchange and activation desks located throughout the airport. If you need to activate or exchange your Japan Rail Pass, follow this step-by-step guide for the process at Tokyo’s largest and most popular airport. Or, you can watch our YouTube video located at the bottom of this page.
After clearing customs and immigration, proceed to the public area beyond the automatic gates.
Head towards the sign for “International Arrivals A” on the roof, but keep in mind we’ll need to go downstairs before reaching it. See step 3 for more details.
To get to the train station, look for the sign that says “Train” and take the escalator down to floor B1F. Once you’re there, turn right and you will see another sign for the train station.
Enter the automatic doors and continue walking straight. After a short while, you will see a green sign on the roof that says “JR” and points to the left – follow that sign to get to the train station.
You have arrived at the exchange location!
Please ensure that you have your Japan Rail Pass voucher and passport ready in hand and wait for your turn. Soon, a JR representative will call you to the desk where they will exchange your JR Pass voucher for a Japan Rail Pass.
You can choose an activation date up to 30 days in advance if you are not planning to use the JR Pass right away.
Narita Express to Tokyo is included in your Japan Rail Pass and can be used to travel with the fastest train alternative from the airport. Seating and reservation are free of charge with a JR Pass and the staff will book it for you during the exchange process in step 4 if you ask them to.
