Kaminarimon Gate & Nakamise Street

Your Senso-ji experience begins at Kaminarimon Gate, the iconic symbol of Asakusa. This vibrant red gate, adorned with a massive lantern, is a popular photo spot. Passing through Kaminarimon leads you to Nakamise Street, a lively shopping avenue that has been a part of temple life for centuries. Here, you can browse stalls offering traditional Japanese snacks, souvenirs, and crafts. Try local treats like freshly made rice crackers, sweet bean paste buns, or colorful wagashi.

Walking down Nakamise is an adventure in itself, with sights, smells, and sounds that immerse you in the spirit of Asakusa.

Exploring the Temple Grounds

At the end of Nakamise Street, you’ll arrive at Hozomon Gate, another grand entrance that leads directly to the temple grounds. The main hall of Senso-ji, called Kannon-do, houses a statue of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Visitors can light incense, make offerings, and say prayers here. The atmosphere inside the hall is serene, even amidst the activity of worshippers and tourists.

Next to the main hall, don’t miss the stunning five-story pagoda. It’s a symbol of traditional Japanese architecture and one of the tallest pagodas in Tokyo. Nearby, you’ll find the Asakusa Shrine, a Shinto shrine that highlights Japan’s unique blend of Buddhist and Shinto practices.
